Management Accounting CIMA - UK Business Forums

Management Accounting CIMA - Can someone explain how you do this qualification?


I've looked on their website and it's not very clear. If you wanted to train as a management accountant, do you have to do the course at University or are the specialist centres around that teach only students who are going for the CIMA thing?

I'd have to enter it as a school leaver which means I will need to start with a certificate in business accounting. Can I work for a company and do this course at the same time?

(Sorry if this post is confusing, I basically need a 'Dummies guide to Management Accounting/CIMA' )

CIMA is usually offered only as day release/distance learning/night school option anyway. When I looked into doing CIMA you could work (even for yourself) and study at the same time. You'll find it harder to get the letters after your name unless you can prove practical experience. Again you used to be able to do this as a self-employed person/company director but you should check with CIMA that this is still the case. As with any Professional qualification, the more relevant your work is to the course, the easier the studies will be.

I was thinking of it as a company that provides a qualification that gets you into management accounting jobs. Is it actually more like a course which extends your knowledge so you can get better jobs? (So you train as a management accountant through a company or uni course then you do the CIMA course which makes you 'professional' with letters after your name)?

How to do the CIMA qualification


You can do the CIMA qualification by;

Studying at home
You can buy text books from CIMA Publishing, BPP, Kaplan and work through these on your own at home.
You can buy a home study course from CIMA, BPP, Kaplan, Acorn Tuition (Acorn Tuition recommended) and others and work through this at home.

Attending classroom courses
You can attend classroom courses run by universities, colleges of further and higher education, private providers such as BPP, Kaplan, Acorn Tuition and others.

Most CIMA students work through this qualification in their spare time alongside working in an accounts department in any business or organisation that is large enough to afford its own accounts department.

The Association of Accounting Technicians was set up (I believe) by the different chartered accounting bodies to provide a technician level qualification for people who would then work in support of qualified accountants.

The AAT qualfication is a widely respected stand alone qualification in its own right. This qualification can be used as a stepping stone to one of the higher level accounting qualifications.

For a good explanation of the variety of junior and senior accounting qualifications in the UK, go to Google search, type 'british qualified accountants' and from the search results select the Wikipedia link which should be the top organic result below the advertisements. For further information about the various accounting bodies click on the links given in the Wikipedia page.

AAT will give you a good grounding in accounting and stands alone as a very good firm qualification. This also exempts you from the first year of the CIMA qualification. Have a look around at different providers for distance learning. There are a lot around and find one that offers a package that will work for you.

Eating of soil and raw starch documented in Madagascar

ScienceDaily (Nov. 9, 2012) ? Pica -- craving and intentionally consuming nonfood substances, such as earth -- and amylophagy, eating raw starches -- are widespread among people around the world, including the U.S. Some 180 species of animals are also known to engage in pica, possibly to rid themselves of toxins.

A study appearing Oct. 17 in the online journal Public Library of Science One (PLoS One) provides the first population-level data of pica in Madagascar. It is one of only a few studies to assess the consumption of earths, raw starches, chalk, ash and other nonfoods across men, women and children.

Pica has been documented throughout history; it was first referenced by Hippocrates in 400 B.C. Since then, there have been hundreds of ethnographic descriptions of pica and dozens of epidemiologic studies, mostly among pregnant women, with a few studies among children.

In contrast to prior studies, this one in northeastern Madagascar found a high prevalence of pica and amylophagy among men, with some 63 percent of adult males engaging in the behavior among the 760 participants from the Makira Protected Area. Also contrary to other findings, this survey, made in 2009, found no peak in pica and amylophagy among pregnant women, though only four pregnant women were sampled. Local taboos against talking about pregnancy prior to birth may have led to underreporting, according to the authors.

The findings for men and pregnant women in Madagascar "fly against much of what I know in terms of distribution" among members of a population, said Sera Young, a research scientist in Cornell University's Division of Nutritional Sciences and the paper's senior author. Young is also the author of the book, "Craving Earth: Understanding Pica -- the Urge to Eat Clay, Starch, Ice and Chalk" (2011).

Across the entire sample in the prior year, 53.4 percent engaged in geophagy, eating specific types of earth, including a fine white clay subsoil, fine sand and red river sediment; 85.2 percent ate such raw starches as raw cassava, raw sweet potato, uncooked rice and another local wild root; and 19 percent ate other items considered locally to be nonfood, including rock salt, used coffee grounds, charcoal, rice chaff, blackboard chalk and ash.

Pica has positive and negative consequences, making it an important public health concern, said Young.

On the positive side, clay-based pica may be protective, by coating the intestines or binding directly to toxins and pathogens, thereby preventing them from entering the blood, Young added. Clay also acts as an anti-diarrheal. Such protections may be especially beneficial to vulnerable populations like pregnant women and children. Another potential benefit is that earth-based pica may act like a multivitamin, adding micronutrients like iron or calcium to the diet, which may help explain why men consume it. However, the bioavailability of these micronutrients has been shown to be very low.

On the negative side, earth, starch or other pica substances could bind to iron in the diet, leading to or worsening anemia. Also, some raw starches are high in calories but are not nutritious. And some substances may contain pathogens or harmful chemicals.

"It could be a really harmful behavior, which causes anemia, for example, or it could be a low-tech protective behavior," said Young.

1) OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY: The Sr. Human Resource Business Partner will consult with employees, supervisors, managers, executives, and external contacts to provide expert advice, problem solve, and recommend solutions on the full spectrum of employee and labor relations matters and compliance issues. This position is responsible for system-wide investigations, responding to situations, and managing all levels of disciplinary actions. Will standardize and help coordinate some of the work responsibilities of the Production Supervisors, and utilize their expertise to help mentor and develop the supervisory team. Advises and collaborates with the Sr.HR Manager, operational managers, and their staff regarding the Implementation of HR Policies, Procedures and Forms in the areas of On Boarding, Off Boarding, Performance Management and Talent Management to ensure regulatory compliance. Will also serve as the primary liaison between Weber Aircraft and the Union.

2) DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A) Provide HR consulting services to supervisors and managers regarding ER policies, the CBA and their interpretation and application.
B) Mediate supervisor/employee issues, assisting both parties in coming to a satisfactory and appropriate resolution.
C) Manage involuntary terminations which include risk assessment, approval, structuring the termination and the communication. Work with Legal to investigate and formulate responses to agency charges (EEOC, DOL, Wage and Hour Board, etc.).
D) Work with Sr. HR Manager to prepare, plan for, conduct, and consult with Legal on recommendations in complex investigations.
E) Implement a proactive employee relations program: identify problems through turnover reports and the review of performance appraisals; track and follow up on probationary employees; develop ?marketing? plan; develop relationships, attend functions and conduct site surveys and action plans as a result of survey results.
F) Prepare for and execute third step grievance meetings with local Union Business Agent and for the last step, Joint Rail-Truck Arbitration Grievance Board.
G) Contribute to the business strategy by helping business leaders to identify, prioritize, and build organizational capabilities, behaviors, structures, and processes
H) Partner with recruitment to implementing strategies for hiring, assessing, developing and realigning resources
I) Help train supervisors and managers to counsel, provide employees with development opportunities, and ensure that they are able to meet current and future performance standards.
J) Complete monthly reports, as assigned. Complete special projects or presentations, as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned.

3) QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
A) Knowledge and skills: Strong positive employee relations skills, problem solving skills, including grievance resolution, negotiation and conflict resolution skills. Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, presentation skills, and organization and analytical capabilities. Strong computer skills and intermediate experience with Microsoft Office programs. Self-motivated, proactive, and results oriented. Incumbent must be able to work extended hours/days up to and including all 3 shifts when necessary, however this is primarily a day shift. Must have knowledge of federal and state safety regulations (EEO, FLSA, etc.) Requires internet and intranet usage and e-mail / fax correspondence. Work independently with high level of confidentiality, professional standards and ethics. Demonstrate strong organizational and leadership skills in an office environment with in depth familiarity to company rules and office procedures. Possess good grammar and communication skills with the ability to work under pressure, set priorities and handle confidential and sensitive company matters. Preferred knowledge and experience with HIPPA compliance.
B) Education and/or Experience: Bachelor?s Degree in Human Resources Management, Business, or related field. Five years as an HR generalist, HR manager, or direct work experience in employee relations. Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with all aspects of labor and employee relation activities and managing dispute resolution issues needed Excellent interpersonal, communications, organizational and management skills required. PHR or SPHR certification is desired.
C) Communication Skills: Must have the ability to generate written communication and to operate required office equipment. Strong customer service orientation and employee relations skills. Ability to work in a high pressure environment with frequent interruptions resulting in the need to reprioritize tasks. Must be able to properly handle sensitive and confidential information, and work well in a team-oriented environment. Ability to read and review written communication. Speech and hearing abilities that allow individual to communicate clearly and distinctly in English.
D) Reasoning Ability: Ability to think strategically and solve problems.
4) PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ABILITIES: This position requires extended periods of sitting while working with computers, viewing computer monitors and other office equipment. Finger dexterity needed in using misc. office equipment such as telephone, typing, ten key, fax, copy machine etc. Bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to approximately twenty pounds are required during tasks related to the job. In addition, this position, at times will require prolonged standing and distance walking throughout the facility. Position may require occasional travel for training purposes.

How Google is preventing Hangouts from turning into Chatroulette

Remember Chatroulette? It's?a site that randomly paired strangers up for video chats. Nowadays,?it?mainly?serves as a cautionary tale. Developers, don't let your video chat services grow up to have Chatroulette-style male anatomy problems.

Now while Chatroulette has indeed?slipped out of the spotlight,?Google+ Hangouts are becoming more popular. I?occasionally hold public ones and, over the last few months, have seen so many individuals expose themselves that I've?threatened to send a collection of offensive Hangout?screenshots to the Googler responsible for the service.

Thanks to some changes being implemented though, I might not need to torture anyone just yet.

Google+ director Pavni Diwanji explains???in a post on Google+, naturally?? that in an attempt to "weed out bad behavior,"?Google will now "automatically record a small snippet" whenever a user in a public Google+ Hangout is reported. When this happens, everyone in the Hangout will be notified that it is being recorded and the resulting clip will be deleted after it is reviewed. A Google spokesperson clarified that members of the company's?abuse prevention team are the ones who?determine if behavior seen in a snippet?violates the?Google+ terms of service and that the snippet is less than a minute in length.

A snippet is?"[o]n the order of seconds," Google senior vice president Vic Gundotra further?emphasized to me in a Google+ comment. "[A]nd most importantly, we delete it after review.?"

This process may sound vaguely familiar because?Airtime, a browser-based video chat service?created by Napster co-founders Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning, deals with user abuse by?taking snapshots of video chats. The clips are analyzed by software and sent to trained Airtime employees for review if they trigger?a risk-management algorithm. Unsurprisingly, this process made a lot of folks uneasy, as they didn't enjoy knowing that their video chats were randomly and continually monitored?? even if it was for their own good.

Knowing how negative the response to Airtime's process was, one would think that other services would shy away from incorporating anything similar. Google went ahead and did it anyway?? but this time it sounds like it is being done better.

Google's new abuse prevention measure isn't the only way in which Google+ Hangouts are kept clean, of course.?While it isn't possible for one user to kick another?out of a Hangout, if all participants report or block someone, he or she is booted out. Additionally,?individuals with patterns of misbehavior are prevented from joining or creating public Hangouts.

I didn't find the first wave of abuse prevention measures in Google+ Hangouts to be sufficient, but I've got some hope that the threat of recorded snippets being reviewed by an?abuse prevention team might be enough to discourage rude folks from unzipping their pants. And if it doesn't? They certainly won't get a second chance to drop trou.
